Geography
The Republic of Liberia is in Western Africa. It is bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire and the North Atlantic Ocean.

Monrovia is the capital. Other urban areas include Buchanan, Gbarnga and Harbel.

The terrain is mostly flat to rolling coastal plains, rolling plateau and low mountains. Major rivers are the Cavalla, Cestos, Lofa, Mano, Mesurado, St John, St Paul and the Ya.

The climate of Liberia is tropical. The average annual rainfall is up to two hundred inches.

Environment
The Society for Conservation of Nature aims to promote nature conservation and support the establishment of a protected area network.

Sapo National Park became a protected area in 1983. The Park, which encompasses areas of tropical rainforest, is home to over five hundred species of birds.

Lake Piso, the largest lake in Liberia, is listed on Ramsar's Wetlands of Importance. Other wetlands listed are Gbedin Wetlands, Kpatawee Wetlands, Marshall Wetlands and Mesurado Wetlands.

Architecture
Americo-Liberians, who were resettled in Liberia in the 1800s, imported American architectural style to Liberia. However, the long civil war in Liberia led to the destruction of many of the country's buildings.

Population
The population of Liberia was estimated at 4.6 million in 2018.

Languages
English is the official language. Sixteen local languages are spoken.

Religion
Forty percent are Christian and twenty percent Muslim. A significant percentage of the people have indigenous beliefs.

Food
Rice is the staple food in Liberia. It is often eaten with meat or fish sauces. Fufu, made from cassava, is a traditional food.

Soups and stews are popular. Palm oil is used in cooking.

Vegetables available include aubergines, cabbages, carrots, cassava, okra, peppers, plantains, pumpkins and sweet potatoes.

Tropical fruits are bananas, citrus fruits, coconuts, mangoes, papayas and pineapples. Peanuts are grown.

Coffee is produced. Local drinks are ginger beer, palm wine, and beer.
